If you always come across tshirt order for either company or personal, you should know that there are 2 common printing methods for t-shirt - silkscreen and heat transfer printing

Let make simple explanation for these 2 printing method
A) Silkscreen – need block and manual printing / Suitable for solid color (some people call spot color) / Color and order quantity is the cost factor
B) Heat Transfer – Digital printing on PU Vinyl then heat transfer to tshirt / Suitable for full color with gradient or photo printing / image size the cost factor

The question is how determine the best printing method? There is no absolute answer. We highly recommend you show us your tshirt artwork design and layout, so that we can advise the best printing method base on your artwork and order quantity.


Here is one of the example:

have a look with below tshirt design. The image size is A4, consist of wording at top, full color logo in the middle and yellow color wording at bottom. What is the most cost effective way for printing?

In order to determine the printing cost, we need to know the order quantity. If the order quantity is below 5pcs, then heat transfer printing is the most cost effective and suitable method

If there is bulk quantity about 100pcs or above. There are 2 options. 

Option 1 - 100% silkscreen printing

Result: the top white wording and bottom yellow wording is fine. The logo in the middle might not meet expectation due to limitation of silkscreen can't produce high quality CMYK image.

Option 2 - silkscreen and heat transfer combination

Result: Silkscreen printing for top and bottom wording (as silkscreen printing is suitable for solid color printing). For logo in the middle, use heat transfer full color printing. 

We believe option 2 is the best printing method to maintain cost effective and printing quality for bulk order volume. However, it is subject to the final artwork design. Hence we highly recommend customer to show us your tshirt design, so that we can propose the right printing method for your tshirt.

The benefit of silkscreen printing
Technology – Silkscreen is a versatile printing technique suitable for printing on shirts, paper, wood, plastic and glass. The design is transferred to a frame with screen mesh stretched taut across it. Ink is pressed through the screen with a squeegee. Silk screens are coated with a light sensitive photo emulsion. Graphics are printed on clear vellum and placed over the screen, then exposed to a strong light for a prescribed time. The image is developed with warm water under pressure.
Print quality – Usually silkscreen is manual hand printing, therefore the print quality is subject to person skill set who perform the job.
Setup time – Very long - It need to prepare block which coated with light sensitive photo emulsion. It need to adjust the position of each block in order to make sure the ink are printed in right place.
Production time – Once all block are finish setup, the production will become easier. However, it depend on how many colors consist in the printed image as silkscreen print each color one by one.
Cost – Screen printing is cost-effective for volume order and with one or two-color printing. Silk screen works best with dynamic, iconic images specifically prepared for the medium.

Heat Transfer Printing

Heat transfer refers to printing graphics on shirts using transfer paper and a heat press machine. A shirt is placed in the machine, and transfer paper is placed face-down over the shirt. The heating unit is brought down over them for a prescribed time to print the image on the shirt.Transfer paper is available for inkjet. The design must be flipped horizontally and printed to the transfer paper prior to use. It is also possible to silk screen onto transfer paper.

Advantages
With heat transfer, the unit cost is low for short-run, full-color image, and good quality. Heat-press technology is capable of printing any digital image created in programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

Silkscreen Printing

Silk screen is a versatile printing technique suitable for printing on shirts, paper, wood, plastic and glass. The design is transferred to a frame with screen mesh stretched taut across it. Embroidery

It’s a known process that uses colored threads to sew the design of t-shirt. It can produce an elegant and classy look if you prefer long lasting prints, quality image, more colors, and others. Take note that the price may vary depending on logos and image's size. Most of the corporate customer prefer embroidery printing for their uniform, this is due to embroidery is long lasting and it is 3D look.


Direct to Garment (DTG)

Direct to garment is very much like a desktop printer and print the image on fabric directly.
Direct to garment is developed to fill in the gaps left by the other printing methods. For example, embroidery doesn't allow for photographic detail. Screen printing multiple colors is extremely expensive and requires high minimum order quantities due to the high set-up costs of each image. Heat transfers deliver a thick, rubbery feel to the graphic. However, DTG might not suitable for all kind of fabric / cloth material. Also, DTG printing cost is extremely high, therefore it is not suitable for bulk printing.
